Newsom’s call for a gun control amendment: Letters

Gun Rights

Re “The 28th Amendment” (June 11):

I applaud Gov. Gavin Newsom for thinking outside the conventional box; but speaking practically, I urge President Biden to convene a gun summit at Camp David instead.

That’s because I believe the time and energy it actually would take to ratify a 28th Amendment could be put to better use. Instead of taking decades to secure approval of two-thirds of Congress and three-quarters of the states, a gun summit at Camp David — with leaders from the NRA, 2nd Amendment proponents, law enforcement and grieving families in attendance — could hammer out new, common-sense gun safety measures in a matter of days.

Impossible, you say?  Isn’t that what critics of Jimmy Carter said when he brought old warriors Anwar Sadat of Egypt and Menachem Begin of Israel together at Camp David in 1978? If, by chance, you have forgotten, their Middle East peace agreement still is in effect today.

Parents protest teaching CRT in the classroom

Re “School board meetings now political battlegrounds” (June 10):

Writer Beau Yarbrough cites Critical Race Theory as a “decades-old academic framework that argues racism is embedded in government and business systems.” However, as we have seen with lesson plans used in public schools, teachers refer to White students as oppressors and make practices such as hard work, punctuality and doing assigned classwork seen as negatives. Parents now are rightly standing up and protesting these lessons. Many educators have joined politicians and the media to try to divide the American people by race to create chaos.

Trump indictment

I submit that the question has been asked and answered by Tom Campbell’s analysis published today (June 13) and I join and stipulate with his observations.

As a Hillary “deplorable” I would just say it’s the “whose ox is getting gored” rule of law. I will vote for Rasputin if for no other reason as a protest vote against the relentless pursuit to take him down. In the end, this is an animus against the republic.
