White House slams ‘shameful’ Florida permitless concealed carry gun bill

The White House slammed Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) signing a state law that removes the requirement for a permit to carry a concealed gun.

Biden’s press secretary called “shameful” DeSantis’s decision to sign the bill “so soon after another tragic school shooting.” The bill makes Florida the 26th state with so-called permitless constitutional carry laws.

“This is the opposite of commonsense gun safety,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement Monday. “The people of Florida, who have paid a steep price for state and congressional inaction on guns from Parkland to Pulse nightclub to Pine Hills, deserve better.”

Jean-Pierre reiterated President Joe Biden’s push for new gun control measures, including a call to ban assault-style weapons.

The Florida Senate voted 27 to 13 on the bill last week, sending the legislation to DeSantis’s desk. The legislation will no longer require Florida residents to obtain a permit to carry a gun outside the home.

It leaves in place preexisting restrictions for felons and others prohibited from carrying a firearm in public.

Democrats attacked the legislation after DeSantis signed the bill.

“Hiding behind closed doors and standing shoulder to shoulder with the NRA, Ron DeSantis just signed legislation that could make it easier for criminals to carry guns,” Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison said in a statement.

The requirement for a concealed carry license will be lifted in July.
