In this Pre-Course Scout for Survival on the Waters Edge, I walk the training area looking at the resources, opportunities, and signs that will help shape the upcoming course. From water and fishing opportunities to wild edibles, fungi, animal sign, bones, terrain, and natural resources, scouting the landscape is an important part of preparing realistic survival training.
The water’s edge is one of the most resource-rich environments available to the survivor—but only if you know what to look for.
In this video we discuss how an experienced survival instructor evaluates an area before students ever arrive, including:
• Reading the landscape
• Water and waterside resources
• Fishing opportunities
• Wild food and fungi
• Animal sign and remains
• Identifying useful natural resources
• Evaluating terrain for survival training
• Planning realistic course scenarios
• Developing situational awareness in the woods
Survival on the Waters Edge focuses on using the resources found where land and water meet to improve your ability to procure food, manage water, understand the environment, and become more self-reliant in the outdoors.
