Chicago’s Therapy Program Reduces Youth Violence

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is gaining traction in Chicago as a promising method to reduce youth violence, with participants experiencing a nearly 40% decrease in arrests for violent crimes. The “Choose to Change” program, which pairs at-risk youth with mentors and utilizes CBT techniques, has shown significant success over the past two years in helping young people reframe their traumatic experiences.

In a city grappling with high rates of gun violence, the Choose to Change initiative serves students who often face harsh circumstances, including gang affiliations and school dropout risks. The program not only equips them with coping strategies but also fosters emotional resilience, allowing them to approach conflicts with a new perspective. With more than 4,000 students participating since its inception, the program’s impact highlights the potential of therapeutic interventions in curbing youth violence and reshaping community attitudes.
