Bill for Gun Violence Prevention Program Introduced

Rep. Yvonne Hinson (D-District 21) has filed House Bill 441, aimed at establishing a Gun Violence Prevention Pilot Program, which would allocate $500,000 to provide crucial resources for at-risk individuals aged 10 to 21. This initiative, developed in partnership with Gainesville’s IMPACT GNV, seeks to address underlying mental health issues and personal conflicts contributing to gun violence in the community.

Hinson emphasizes the program’s importance as it comes following the withdrawal of a $2 million grant meant to support local gun violence initiatives. With the bill currently lacking a Senate sponsor, Hinson urges swift action, noting the potential five-year plan could start as early as July 1, 2025, if approved. This targeted approach aims not only to benefit individuals but also their families, providing access to therapy, conflict resolution, and substance abuse treatment.
