Another Gun Ban Claim That Contradicts The Facts

Gun News

Business Insider claims a new study “proves the idea that the good guy with a gun” is a myth. https://www.businessinsider.com/gun-control-research-concealed-carry-laws-mass-shootings-2020-7

There is a slight problem with that. The official crime reports from the FBI, StatsCanada, the UK’s Office of National Statistics, and every other source of official crime statistics clearly show that “the good guy with a gun” commons a very small percentage of crimes reported to police, typically less than 0.0075 percent of crimes “solved by arrest, and the crimes committed by lawful gun owners alos tend to be less serious than those committed by criminals who cannot legally look at a gun.

If Business Insiders hypothesis were true, relaxing Concealed Carry Weapons licenses would result in a sharp rise in violent crime. But that is not what we see when we look at the data from any of the 195 nations recognized as nations by the UN, we find a sharp decline in crime when CCW laws are relaxed.

In fact, when a skilled eye looks at crime statistics they can tell you when gun controls were initiated, how many times restrictive gun laws drove up crime, when relaxed CCW permits were first issued, and how much those laws have cut violent crime.

Take texas for example, where more than 14% of adult men have a valid License To Carry. Until the 1990’s Texas gun laws had been written into law by a Reconstruction era Legislature, and violent crime rates had been far higher than the national average since 1866.

The chart below was built on FBI and DOJ crime statistics for the years between 1960 and 2015. The numbers can be verified in the annual FBI Uniform Crime Report, or more easily in this spreadsheet: http://www.disastercenter.com/crime/Texas%20crime%20and%20punishment%20statistics.html

As you can see, in 1960 the murder rate was 40% higher than the national average. Hollywood’s campaign to “Send the Army and take them all” began in January 1964 in Texas, resulting in an ultimate rise to 16.7 murders per 100,000 population in 1979.

When the reconstruction era gun laws began to be softened violent crime rates began to fal..

Since 2013, Texas murder rate, once the highest in the United States has been well below the national average, and would have been lower yet if paid propagandists for the gun ban industry had not tried to restore the Reconstruction era gun laws responsible for the once high crime rates.

Over the last 57 years I have examined the crime statistics of mor than 170 countries, omitting only those countries that do not issue official crime statistics without finding a single instance where gun controls or gun bans reduced crime, made anyone safer, or provided anything a reasonable person would call a benefit. Unless you consider this picture from WWII, documenting the Holocaust, a “benefit.”

So the bottom line is simple enough. Lawful gun owners seldom commit any crime. While they cannot deter a would-be mass murderer, they can and frequently do stop a mass killer before the casualy count reaches mass shootings levels. The mean number of victims when a good guy with a gun is present is 2.7. But if no one is present to defend the unarmed, the mean casualty total goes to 14.9.

And that means reasonable License to Carry are a valuable asset to police, who generally support such laws.
