North Carolina Proposes Major Changes to Gun Laws

North Carolina lawmakers introduce significant bills that would alter gun regulations, including proposals to allow individuals to carry concealed firearms without a permit. Senate Bill 50, recently co-sponsored by Senate Leader Phil Berger, marks a notable shift in legislative attitudes since a similar proposal was rejected in 2023.

Among the proposed changes, House Bill 5 would permit elected officials to carry concealed weapons in areas otherwise designated as gun-free zones, sparking debates on safety and responsible gun ownership. Advocates for gun control express alarm over these shifts, particularly given that recent studies indicate gun violence has become the leading cause of death for children and teens, emphasizing the urgent need for legislative caution.
