Brady PAC endorses Andy Kim for U.S. Senate

Brady PAC, one of the nation’s largest and most influential gun violence prevention groups, has endorsed Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown) for the U.S. Senate.

The support comes four days after his main opponent for the nomination, Tammy Murphy, a staunch gun control advocate who had filmed her first TV ad outside the international headquarters of the National Rifle Association, dropped out of the race.

“Andy Kim is decent, empathetic, thoughtful, and effective. He has always led, from his very first moment running for office, on the promise of a better and safer America for our children,” said Fred Guttenberg, a Brady PAC senior advisor whose 14-year-old daughter, Jaime, was killed in the Parkland school shooting in 2018.

Brady PAC had endorsed Kim, a former Obama National Security aide, when he first ran for Congress in 2018.

“Too many families have buried loved ones because of senseless gun violence, and it’s long past time for our country to have the courage to take meaningful action on this issue,” Kim said. “I’m proud to be backed by Brady PAC, an organization that has been a leader in gun violence prevention across the country, and I am ready to continue fighting for common sense gun control reform in the Senate.”

As a congressman, Kim co-sponsored the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, and the Assault Weapons Ban.

“Democracy, anti-corruption, and public safety are on the ballot this year in New Jersey. Andy Kim will make history as the first AAPI U.S. Senator from the East Coast, and he will equally make an astounding impact on reducing gun violence among communities of color,” said Brady PAC Executive Director Ashley Lantz.

Since Kim and Murphy were staunch supporters of gun safety legislation, major gun control groups had not taken sides in the Democratic primary.

Kim will run with organization support everywhere but Camden County, where he rejected their line, and Cumberland, where he’s opted against getting involved in what looks like a hugely messy divorce between two factions.
