New Mexico GOP threatens Democratic governor with impeachment: ‘You’re acting like a dictator’

Gun Rights

Republican state lawmakers launched a resolution Wednesday to impeach Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM) for violating the Second Amendment after she banned carrying firearms in some public places.

New Mexico state House Reps. Stefani Lord and John Block initiated the resolution, alleging the governor’s emergency public health order banning concealed-carry in Albuquerque playgrounds and parks infringes upon New Mexico’s gun rights, CBS News reported.

“The rights of New Mexicans are not up for debate,” Lord said in a post to her X account. “No matter how hard Lujan Grisham tries to violate the constitution, she will never succeed, I will be there to stand firm against her tyranny.”

A spokesperson for Grisham said in a statement obtained by KRQE News, “There’s not much to say in direct response to this inane effort.” The spokesperson added that Lord and Block were just attempting to stage a political stunt.

In her second State of the State address earlier this week, Grisham laid out her public safety agenda, which included banning assault weapons and raising the age limit to 21 in order to purchase any firearm. Grisham said in a statement to CBS that New Mexicans are “begging” for legislators to address a long list of topics, including public safety.

The outlet reported New Mexico residents, retired law enforcement, Republican lawmakers, and the National Rifle Association are supporting Grisham’s impeachment by challenging her alleged Second Amendment violations with a lawsuit, which the New Mexico Supreme Court recently heard arguments for.

In an interview with KRQE News, Lord said when Grisham said “her oath was not absolute,” it exposed her to being ousted.

“What she said is so inexcusable, it would be hard for even the best attorney on planet earth to save her,” Block told the outlet.

“The point is that she has too much power,” Lord told CBS. “We’re just trying to say to her, ‘You have too much power, you’re acting like a dictator. … And we’re going to impeach you.'”
