FPC Statement on Tennessee Governor Lee’s Threat to Hold a Special Session to Promote Gun Control

Gun News

NASHVILLE (May 9, 2023) — Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC) issued the following statement regarding Tennessee Governor Bill Lee’s announcement after having failed to secure enactment of gun control legislation during the regular session of the Tennessee Legislature, that he “…will call for the Tennessee General Assembly to convene a special legislative session on August 21, 2023, to strengthen public safety and preserve constitutional rights.”

As addressed in our policy brief Red Flag Laws Raise Red Flags, Firearms Policy Coalition is firmly against the adoption and implementation of red flag laws in all current forms. These laws deprive individuals of their right to due process of law before their rights are eliminated and property seized, a result that should offend anyone who values the Constitution and what it stands for.

Regardless of the form any potential legislation takes, political expediency or anti-rights policy preferences are not substitutes for the solemn duty to protect and uphold the Constitution, the principles of individual liberty and respect for the law. Firearms Policy Coalition will continue its fight to restore the Second Amendment rights of the People and oppose any efforts to abrogate those same fundamental liberties.

FPC demands that Governor Lee withdraw his threat to hold a special session focused on gun control and rather advance the cause of individual liberty and natural rights. FPC will stand against any legislative push for gun control during Tennessee’s special session, if it becomes reality, and we urge all of our members and supporters to oppose Governor Lee’s proposal at FPCAction.org.
