Utah: Legislature Adjourns Sine Die from 2022 Session

Gun Rights

On Friday, the Utah Legislature adjourned sine die from its 2022 session. During this session, the Legislature passed Senate Bill 115, legislation to enhance Utah’s firearm preemption law. It will soon be on its way to Governor Spencer Cox for his consideration. Please continue to contact Gov. Cox and ask him to sign SB 115 into law.

Senate Bill 115 enhances Utah’s existing firearm preemption statute by providing a mechanism to ensure compliance. Firearm preemption occupies the field of firearm laws and regulations with the state, preventing localities from enacting their own gun control, which, in turn, could create a confusing patchwork of regulations and ordinances. This legislation will help ensure consistency in firearm laws throughout the state of Utah.

In addition, the House Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee rejected House Bill 133, a Bloomberg-style anti-gun bill that is being pushed around the country at both the state and federal levels. This would have criminalized private transfers absent the involvement of a licensed firearms dealer. To read more about HB 133, click here.
