Mississippi Legislature Reconvenes: Urge Your Senators To Take Action on State Firearms Preemption Improvement Bill

Gun Rights

Dear Mississippi NRA Member:

Back in March, before the legislative session was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mississippi House of Representatives had passed House Bill 1215, sponsored by Rep. Shane Barnett (R-Greene, Perry & Wayne Cos), by a vote of 81-36.  The Legislature reconvened on Tuesday, with the bill having been referred by Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann to the Senate Judiciary B and Senate Accountability, Efficiency and Transparency Committees.  These committees have until Tuesday, June 9, to act on this important legislation.  Please contact your state senator and urge them to support HB 1215.

House Bill 1215 adds state agencies to the existing preemption statute that limits the authority of cities and counties to pass arbitrary restrictions on firearm possession and provides citizens a remedy for challenging unlawful gun restrictions imposed by these entities.  This is an especially important protection for enhanced and regular carry permit holders.  Preemption statutes protect gun owners by ensuring there is uniformity of laws across the state and not a “patchwork” of confusing and conflicting regulations.
