Ohio State Nurses Demand Enhanced Security Measures

Nurses at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center recently protested for improved security measures following the alarming discovery of two loaded guns within hospital premises, one found during a patient’s CAT scan. The Ohio State Nurses Organization reports that nearly 89% of frontline registered nurses believe the hospital administration has failed to adequately address security concerns, prompting calls for the installation of metal detectors at emergency department entrances.

As concerns about workplace safety in healthcare settings rise nationally, nurses express feeling vulnerable, with one stating, “They are asking us to bring a stethoscope to a gunfight.” While the hospital maintains a 24/7 security presence, leadership acknowledges the need for enhanced protocols and is conducting a review of security practices, though nurses insist significant changes are essential to ensure their safety and that of their patients.
