Gillibrand Proposes Age Increase for Assault Weapons Purchase

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has introduced legislation to raise the legal age for purchasing assault weapons from 18 to 21, mirroring existing requirements for handguns. In her view, this change is critical as data reveals that incidents involving assault weapons see more than 2.5 times the number of people shot compared to other firearms, underlining the urgency of the measure.

While some residents express cautious support, citing the need for further gun control measures, others remain skeptical, arguing that strict regulations may not deter criminals. The proposed law marks a renewed effort after a similar bill failed to pass in Congress earlier this year, highlighting an ongoing national debate about gun ownership and safety.
