I wish I could say I was surprised by the school shooting in my city of Madison, but I can’t (“Madison police say 3 are dead and 6 injured in school shooting,” Dec. 17).
Every day that goes by, it’s only a matter of when and where the next mass shooting will be. Until our “elected” representatives enact stricter laws to curb the violence, it won’t end.
We need the assault weapons ban reinstated, an end to open and conceal carry, elimination of ghost guns and the websites that enable them, and felony liability for parents of children who use unsecured weapons or weapons given them by the parent. We also need more gun buy-back programs.
Of course you won’t see any of these brought up either locally or through Congress by Republican National Committee members. They’re right there with their “sympathies” after a school shooting, but they’ve made their deal with the National Rifle Association and will block any antigun legislation out of loyalty to the gun industry or fear they’ll be primaried.
As for the Democrats, they’re going to need to decide that rules like the filibuster are going to need to go if they want to pass any meaningful legislation, and the Supreme Court is going to need reforms to keep it.
