ALBANY (WBNG) — New York State Attorney General Letitia James announced a judgment against the National Rifle Association.
Attorney General James said the NRA is now required to reform its governance to abide by the state’s not-for-profit laws.
James’s Office said the judgment comes after a verdict determined the NRA had failed to properly administer charitable funds against state laws.
“For decades, the NRA let self-interested and self-dealing insiders run the organization with complete disregard for the rule of law,” said Attorney General James. “As a result of my office’s efforts to stop corruption at the NRA, the NRA has been forced to clean house.”
Now, the NRA will be required to change how it conducts its board elections and hire an outside consultant to advise on the NRA’s compliance with the court’s directives and other governance practices. It will also need to increase leadership transparency and communication with its board members.
Yet, the National Rifle Association is also declaring victory in the case.
The NRA said the judge denied any invasive measures requested by the government. The organization said the court order works in the NRA’s interest and that many of the changes were proposed by itself.
