Michigan: Take Action Against “Gun-Free Zone” Bills Today!

Gun Rights

Yesterday, the Senate Committee on Civil Rights, Judiciary, and Public Safety passed SB 857 and SB 858 with amendments and the bills will now be eligible for votes on the Senate floor. Please use the take action button below and tell your senator to oppose SB 857 and SB 858!

SB 857 and SB 858 would expand “gun-free zones” in Michigan by prohibiting gun owners from carrying a firearm in the Michigan State Capitol Building, the Binsfeld Senate Office Building, and the Anderson House Office Building, with an exception for legislators. The Capitol Commission in recent years banned both open and concealed firearms carry in the Capitol and Democrat leadership restricted citizens’ rights to carry in legislative office buildings. This legislation would expand and codify those restrictions into state law, making it near impossible for citizens to gain the right to carry in these areas back. SB 858 was amended in committee to remove the restrictions on carrying a firearm in establishments that hold a liquor license.

On Wednesday, the Michigan House of Representatives passed HB 4127 and HB 4128, along party lines. Both bills will now head to the Governor’s desk for her consideration. HB 4127 and HB 4128 expand “gun-free” zones to include polling places and other associated areas. This creates an arbitrary patchwork of so-called “gun free” zones, which could subject otherwise law-abiding gun owners to criminal penalties for crossing arbitrary lines without intent to disrupt the voting process. Contact Governor Whitmer today using the take action button below and urge her to veto HB 4127 and HB 4128.
