WGGB/WSHM) – Governor Maura Healey signed into a law gun reform legislation that aims to crack down on so-called “ghost-guns” and expands the “red flag law.”
Governor Healey and supporters said these stricter gun laws will save lives, but others say it may’ve gone too far
“And now, we’ve come together to enact our state’s most significant gun legislation in a decade,” expressed Gov. Healey.
Massachusetts joining a growing list of states regulating the do-it-yourself firearms known as ghost guns.
“We’re taking action to combat ghost guns and 3D printed guns because as our technology advances, our laws need to advance with them,” added Gov. Healey.
Governor Healey signed the legislation into law last week which will now require all guns to have serial numbers issued through a system that will be designed by the executive office of public safety and security.
“It’s sensible gun legislation that protects the second amendment rights of individuals, but also, puts some strengthening into laws for those who are using illegal or selling illegal weapons particularly in cities in towns,” explained Representative Carlos Gonzalez.
The law also expands the red flag law, which allows courts to take guns away from someone considered a threat to themselves or others.
Gun violence activists praising the law.
“Today I am inspired by the change that is represented by this bill,” said Juanita Batchlor. “We need policy change to make sure our communities are safer from gun violence.”
Juanita Batchelor has been advocating for gun reform ever since losing her son 10 years ago.
“I stand here today not just representing my family but the way too many families who are waiting for answers are losing loved ones to gun violence,” added Batchlor.
But not all are in favor of the bill, the National Rifle Association’s lobbying arm said it will challenge the new bill, calling the bill one of the “most extreme” in the nation.
The second amendment rights organization wrote in a statement:
“Massachusetts has enacted one of the most egregious and freedom-restricting laws in the history of the commonwealth.”
The NRA said they’re planning to legally challenge the legislation, but speakers at Tuesday’s signing, including House Speaker Ron Mariano, said they’re not concerned about this challenge.
