SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane City Council is considering an ordinance which would ban the open carrying of guns at City Hall.

The first reading of the ordinance introduced by Council Member Paul Dillon was considered by council members on Monday.

Open carrying is already illegal on Washington’s state capitol grounds and “municipality buildings used in connection with meetings of the governing body of the city” under state law.

The ordinance would affirm the preexisting state law and ban people from carrying guns in municipal buildings. However, it would still allow those with concealed pistol licenses to bring their guns into City Hall and other buildings.

Council members are considering the ordinance within the context of greater legal deference toward the National Rifle Association (NRA) and other firearm lobbying groups in the federal court system.
