Illinois: Naperville Considering Banning Many Firearm & Magazine Sales

Gun Rights

Tomorrow, at 7:00 P.M., the Naperville City Council will consider File 22-0848, to ban commercial sales of many commonly-owned firearms and standard capacity magazines. NRA Members and Second Amendment supporters are invited to ask the Council to OPPOSE File 22-0848. To view the draft ordinance and for more information on submitting testimony or participating in the hearing, which will be available both in-person and by video conference, click here.

File 22-0848 bans commercial sales of many rifles, pistols, and shotguns based on arbitrary features that do not alter how these firearms function, along with magazines with a capacity greater than ten rounds of ammunition. These firearms and magazines are commonly-owned by law-abiding citizens for various lawful purposes, such as self-defense, competition, recreational shooting, and hunting. The proposed ordinance seeks to ban sales of products that are legal under Illinois law and make Naperville small businesses uncompetitive against those outside the city. It also makes it more difficult for citizens who wish to exercise their Second Amendment rights to do so, because of the added time and expense for them to travel elsewhere to shop.

In addition, Illinois generally prohibits local municipalities from passing their own brand of firearm regulations. That means any ban passed by the Naperville city council will be in violation of state law.

Again, please contact the Naperville City Council and ask them to OPPOSE File 22-0848.
