We’ve all seen photos of the stalwart Illinois cop covering his face from the July 4th horror of yet another made-in-America gun massacre. It is time to be very, very angry.
The trigger on a military weapon was pulled by one man, but he was enabled by a Republican Party and U.S. Supreme Court that have served as lobbyists and apologists for the merchants of death posing as gun manufacturers. The time for bipartisan incrementalism has long passed. Enough.
Huge majorities want gun control, not just “gun safety.” We must ban assault rifles, semi-automatic weapons and high-capacity magazines. Those who feel the need to use such weapons can join their state’s militia as envisioned by the framers of the Constitution.
We must reject every Republican candidate at every level of government. Through silence and advocacy and accepting National Rifle Association money, the Republican Party has created the conditions supporting our never-ending gun tragedies. In a moral sense, the GOP and all who enable it must be held responsible. In a political sense, electing Democrats is the only realistic way to end the American Massacre State and help lead us to a more perfect union.
