Readers respond: A powerful weapon against guns

Gun Rights

I am sorry. I am sad. I grieve for the terrible loss of so many little children in Uvalde, Texas. I am angry and disgusted at members of our Congress who turn their backs on protecting our children. These men and women succeed with the aid of the National Rifle Association’s deep pockets. Here are a few examples of NRA contributions to senators who are on the ballot this year: $3,303,355 to Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.; $1,269,486 to Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis.; $226,007 to Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa; and $104,456 to Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky.

The police and the military cannot protect our children. They try, but they cannot stop a gunman with an assault rifle in advance of these killings. They can only respond – too late. All the massacres in our schools have not changed the positions of many U.S. senators. They still block gun safety measures. They are unmoved. They won’t change.

Semiautomatic rifles are weapons of war, designed to kill people. The majority of Americans want these weapons banned. The issue is not about the right to bear arms. It’s about the right not to be blown to pieces. It’s about protecting our children and ourselves. We have a powerful weapon to prevent access to semiautomatic rifles: the vote. That is the only way to stop this. Those who oppose the ban will not change. Vote them out. Save our children.
